The series is set in an alternate historical version of the United Kingdom in the early 20th century, where scientists have developed Machinart — a fusion of technology and sorcery that brings objects to life with artificial intelligence. These Automatons were created as military weapons, and the humans who control them are known as puppeteers. Yaya is the automaton companion of Raishin Akabane, a puppeteer who travels from Japan to Liverpool to study at the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. Raishin enters the Night Party, a competition held every four years where puppeteers battle using their automatons for the title of Wiseman, though his true motivation is revenge against a mysterious figure who killed his family members.
