Schnaufer, known as "The Illusion of Saint Trond," is one of Karlsland's strongest Nachthexe, or Night Witches. By the end of 1944, her shot-down count approached 100 units, all achieved during nighttime combat, placing her among the top seven witches in the Strike Witches universe. Born in Calw, southern Karlsland, her magical night vision manifested in childhood but was difficult to control, forcing her to live indoors in gloomy conditions. Her parents' wine cellar became her playground. The inability to control her abilities caused permanent optic nerve damage, requiring her to wear strong prescription glasses. She later mastered her powers through military training and became a commanding officer, eventually rising to become Karlsland's youngest combat wing commander.
