Yamamoto Akira, nicknamed Rei by her friends, is a Mars-born fighter pilot in the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy serving aboard the space battleship Yamato during the Great Garmillas War. Most of her family was killed by Garmillan planet bombs, leaving only her and her older brother Akio, who later died in action. Initially assigned to Yamato's accounting department, she fought her way into the fighter squadron and achieved several victories during the voyage to Iscandar. She later became a squadron leader and training instructor before rejoining Yamato during the Gatlantis Campaign, where she played a major role in the political movement to rescue Captain Susumu Kodai. The Pilot Suit version captures Akira in her flight gear, reflecting her role as one of Yamato's elite pilots.
