Barkhorn is the second-in-command of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, originating from Karlsland and serving in the Karlsland Air Force. Known by the pet name Trude, she is humanity's second-greatest ace behind only her close friend Erica Hartmann. She volunteered for military service before the Neuroi invasion, serving in JG2 and later JG52, where she became one of the founding members of the 501st JFW. Her character carries significant emotional weight—when her younger sister Christiane was injured and left comatose during the evacuation of Karlsland, Gertrud's behavior turned nearly suicidal in its recklessness before gradually recovering through her contact with Sergeant Miyafuji. She was the third Karlslander to achieve 250 confirmed kills, earning a Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
