Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is set in an imperial Chinese-inspired court and follows Maomao, a sharp-witted young woman raised by an apothecary in the capital's pleasure district. After being kidnapped and sold into service at the rear palace, she uses her extensive knowledge of medicine, poisons, and chemistry to solve mysterious ailments and intrigues among the emperor's consorts. Despite her desire to remain unnoticed, her exceptional talents repeatedly draw the attention of Jinshi, an enigmatic and beautiful high-ranking eunuch who manages the rear palace.
