Bellemère is a former Marine who adopted the orphaned sisters Nami and Nojiko, raising them in Cocoyasi Village. Her story is one of the most heartbreaking in One Piece's East Blue saga. When the fish-man pirate Arlong invaded the village and demanded a tribute from every family, Bellemère chose to sacrifice herself to protect her daughters, paying the tribute for both children with her own life rather than abandoning them. This defining moment shaped Nami's character for years to come, driving her to steal treasure in a desperate attempt to buy back her village from Arlong's control.
