Botan is one of the most recognizable characters from the series, serving as a guide to the Spirit World and a close friend to protagonist Yusuke Urameshi. Botan is a spirit charged with ferrying souls of the deceased to the Spirit World to face their final judgment. Rather than being a singular entity, she is one of many grim reapers in the Yu Yu Hakusho universe. Initially viewing Yusuke as an interesting subject to study, she develops a deep bond with him and becomes a valuable ally. Botan is genuinely helpful and well-meaning, though somewhat clumsy and short-sighted, with a bubbly and cheery demeanor that can shift to cautious optimism. She sometimes tends to be a motormouth. After Yusuke's revival and appointment as a Spirit Detective, Botan serves as his assistant and trainer, and later supports the entire team including Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama.
