Wolfwood, also known as Nicholas the Punisher, is a major character in Trigun, a sci-fi western set on a desert planet. A traveling priest who wields the Punisher, a massive cross-shaped weapon that symbolizes the sins he carries on his shoulders, Wolfwood is a deeply contradictory figure. Raised in an orphanage, he became a skilled gunman whose pragmatic and pessimistic worldview clashes sharply with the pacifist ideals of the series protagonist, Vash the Stampede. Wolfwood believes that in a world dominated by humans, people are forced to choose who to kill and that true peace is impossible without sacrifice.
