Gintama is set in an alternate Edo-period Japan that has been conquered by aliens known as Amanto. Shimura Shinpachi serves as the straight man of the Yorozuya odd-jobs business, working alongside Gintoki Sakata and Kagura. Despite being overshadowed by his more eccentric companions, Shinpachi is the emotional anchor of the group and is known among fans for his glasses, which have become a running joke throughout the series.
