Shoko Makinohara is a middle school student who shares the name of Sakuta Azusagawa's childhood crush. She first encounters Sakuta during a rainstorm and later reappears after his sister Kaede's recovery, helping him cope with grief over his sister's changed personality. Her presence unravels a complex temporal paradox—two versions of Shoko exist, one saved by Sakuta's donated heart after his future death, and another whose survival depends on that event. When Mai dies preventing the accident, Shoko aids Sakuta in altering the past, creating a timeline where they never meet. Their connection endures, as Sakuta later recognizes her by the sea.
