A middle school student who shares the name of Sakuta Azusagawa's childhood crush, she first encounters him during a rainstorm and later reappears to help Sakuta cope with grief over his sister Kaede's changed personality. Her story involves a temporal paradox where two versions of Shoko exist: one saved by Sakuta's donated heart after his future death, and another whose survival depends on that very event. When Mai dies preventing the accident, Shoko aids Sakuta in altering the past, creating a timeline where they never meet. Their bond endures, however, as Sakuta later recognizes her by the sea.
