Honda Koji Shokai presents Amabie in their Japanese Yokai Girls line as a Special Color version figure. This collectible reimagines one of Japan's most fascinating folklore creatures through an original figure design. Amabie is a mermaid-like yōkai with a mixture of human and fish features, including long hair, a scaly body, a beak-like mouth, and three legs. According to the only recorded sighting from Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in April 1846, a bright light appeared over the ocean for several nights before a government official investigated and encountered the creature. Amabie prophesied a six-year bumper crop and instructed that should disease break out, people should show its picture everywhere for protection. The creature then returned to the sea, and its story was distributed via newspaper woodblock prints. Amabie is considered an auspicious yōkai, and keeping an image of one is believed to ward off illness. The name's origin remains a mystery, with some scholars suggesting it may be a misspelling or regional variation of the similar yōkai amabiko.
