No.5 was serialized in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Monthly Ikki from November 2000 to January 2005, spanning eight wideban volumes. The series is set in a futuristic world where a group of elite beings numbered one through nine serve as protectors of humanity. When No.5 breaks from the group after falling in love with a woman named Yuri, he becomes a target of his former comrades. The manga explores themes of identity, rebellion, and love against a backdrop of political intrigue and philosophical questioning, all rendered in Matsumoto's uniquely expressive art style. Viz Media originally published the first two volumes in English in 2002-2003 before discontinuing due to low sales, later re-releasing the series in a four-volume deluxe edition from 2021 to 2022.
