Calcifer is the fire demon who powers Howl's moving castle, bound to the wizard by a magical contract. In the film, he recognizes that the protagonist Sophie has been cursed by the Witch of the Waste and offers to break her curse in exchange for her help in breaking the spell that keeps him bound to Howl.
