Boshi Jizo (Honda Koji Shokai)

This figure by Honda Koji Shokai depicts the Boshi-Jizo, a representation of the Buddhist bodhisattva Jizo holding a child. The Boshi-Jizo, meaning "mother-and-child Jizo," is a revered religious icon in Japanese Buddhism. Jizo is a compassionate deity who saves those who call out to him, illuminating the righteous way from hell to paradise and protecting the vulnerable. The original Boshi-Jizo statue can be found on the grounds of Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo, one of Japan's most significant Buddhist temples. The statue is often partly covered with red woolen clothing as offerings from visitors, reflecting the devotional practices associated with Jizo worship. Jizo statues hold deep cultural significance at temples such as Kenchoji, where the Butsuden enshrines a towering Jizo figure as the temple's central deity.
